what, if anything has religion done for us?
science on the other hand, has cured disease, put man on the moon, and i could go on all night. but what exactly has religion done,i know fuck all.
lol, people are saying "it gave us music, art ect.." compared to a cure for smallpox? even if religion give us them things they are not important or as important than science.

It gives people a sense of peace, feeling as if they know that they are on this earth for a reason. That’s something that science can’t do.

Religion helped science in history also. Religion helps people put a framework on how to live a life that is good. Many of the people that helped put man on the moon were inspired by Religion. You can’t uniquely separate science from religion because many believe they work hand in hand.

There are many artistic things that have come from it. For instance, I view Paradise Lost as one of the best written things in fiction.

Plenty of great and interesting stories come from both Jewish and Christian mythology (to just pick those to … and I don’t mean the bible, talking about things like demonology and such).
Saint Onle | Feb 04, 2010

monarchs used religion to control the serfs. The serfs thought if they worked hard and had a crappy life, they’d have an amazing afterlife in heaven

@Highway- if you didn’t notice, there is something called empathy and its why everyone doesnt steal from each other cuz they dont want to get their stuff stolen
@Talon D- its called survival of the fittest. If you can;t protect yourself, sux for u
@His Divine Shadow- true, such as Gregor Mendel, but religion has destroyed knowledge as well.

It enabled the progression of science. It used to be the strongest guy took whatever he wanted, raped whoever he wanted, and generally did whatever he wanted. But the weaklings that wanted to study the world instead of bully people said: If you stop stealing and raping you will get to eat Sky Cake in heaven forever. Then they began to make scientific discoveries.

SOME people just don’t know good from bad and their religious beliefs and their fear of god are the only things that keep them in line. Granted religions brings conflict sometimes, it mainly teaches us how to coexist peacefully.
before you think about going to the moon or curing diseases, you first have to worry about your "not so crazy" neighbor who might want to kill you just because you both fancy the same girl

if it wasnt for religion a lot of people wouldnt have been born, including me and you. science does a lot, but religion for some people keep them sane. science and religion go hand in hand, believe it or not. a lot of things in a lot of religion concerning health are actually accurate.
if it werent for religion, even the olde greek religion, people wouldnt have the strive to live, to see something better. it gives them hope. and the bible on one hand is a book of life stories, it shows you what happened to certain people, how they dealt with situation, some relate to today, some dont. no one can diss religion as much as anyone can diss science.

Vanessa | Feb 04, 2010

Well maybe not so much in modern times but in ancient times especially with the Greeks and the Romans it gave us a simple way to explain the unexplainable.

In general though, it gives the basis for a peaceful society. I mean , do you honestly think that crime rates would stay the same even if everyone believed that there was no consequence in the afterlife. Without religion, you’d live in a world where killing, stealing, raping, cheating, lying, etc, weren’t technically wrong. They might be unlawful, but why won’t be immoral.

Really, if there was no religion we’d have the self-control of dogs. We’d be living like animals. If you’re chill with that than whatever but I’m not.

On a completely unrelated note, I highly recommend that you look into how science has actually solidified, if not religion, at least the idea of intelligent design (ie there is a god or gods). Just in studying chemistry and biology we can see how complex the world really is, and the real logical fallacy is to believe that all this happened by chance. Just saying.

this is no joke about "one nation under God" thing

It hasn’t done anything. All it has done is seperate all of us from eachother. We all have our differences and religion just adds on to it. It reminds us even more that we aren’t all alike. Due to religion we have people that won’t marry the other race, aren’t accepted for their sexual preference, etc. I personally believe that the day religion doesn’t exist is the day we’ll have world peace. I know we all have our own beliefs etc. but don’t let all of that and religion sepearte us more then we already are. Keep your opinions to yourself and respect others beliefs. It’s that simple.

Religion has caused a great deal of pain turmoil and death. Not much good has come from it. Religion developed society and without that there would be no science. Without religion and spirituality we never would have hope. Without hope we would never have cured any disease or done anything else for our planet or species. It would all be hopeless.

why did oliver cromwell kill catholic irish?
;]

you ever heard the expression "The curse of Cromwell on you"

He was a Protestant that disliked the Catholics, he was against the Irish revolt, him and his soldiers took the land of the Catholics to pay off the debts to his troops. At this time in history there were a lot of political issues between New England as it was called and England and "New Ireland". This is all I know off the top of my head. You may need to research this further then I told you!
Sarah | Feb 03, 2010

He was a soldier, he went where he was ordered and did what he was ordered to do. The English regarded Ireland as a subject colony at the time and the Irish were in revolt.

How you feel about Cromwell pretty much depends on whether you are English or Irish, Protestant or Catholic and most of the Websites I’ve found are biased one way or the other.

Wiki - actually has a reasonably balanced site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Crom well
gaylene B | Feb 03, 2010

Only in combat.

Cromwell was sent to Ireland in 1649 to suppress a Catholic Irish revolt that had been going on since 1641. The Irish had allied themselves with the remnants of Royalist armies defeated in the English Civil Wars. Their combined forces were therefore a direct threat to the government in England that Cromwell represented.

Cromwell returned to England in May 1650, before the end of the campaign. The harsh settlement imposed on the Catholic population after the rebellion had been finally ended, was government policy, not Cromwell’s, and was implemented on the ground by other army commanders,as Cromwell was in England.

Cromwell supported the settlement, but neither thought it up nor carried it out on the ground.

The Catholic Irish killed by troops under Cromwell’s command were in the course of his military operations and clearly within the known and accepted (by both sides) rules of 17th century warfare.

Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar (2002)

IMDB rating: 6.60

Plot: The story of the rise and fall of the Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar, born July 13, 100 B.C., and starting his career as a young Roman with visions of greatness for the Eternal City. When Sulla conquers Rome with his troops, Caesar is one of the very few to stand up against the despotic dictator. This impresses Pompeius, Sulla’s general, and he protects the young man, who is a nephew of Marius, a well known veteran, against the wrath of Sulla. After Sulla’s death, Caesar returns from exile and starts his political career. Caesar’s daughter Julia marries general and senator Pompeius, and Caesar takes Pompeius’ troops in order to simply safeguard the borders to Gaul, but instead conquers the whole country. His final victory takes place at the fortress of Alesia, where the Germanic troops under Vercingetorix capitulate. Back in Rome, Ceasar is not trusted anymore, since the troops are loyal to him alone and it is feared by Pompeius and Cato that he will use the troops to conquer Rome and declare himself King, including the establishing of a inheritbale right to the throne. Instead, Caesar does none of that and sets off to Egypt in order to ensure a constant delivery of agricultural goods to the Roman Empire. After a glorious return to Rome, his former friends Pompeius and Cato are dead, their deaths blamed on Caesar, and his personal life is in ruins since he could not resist the temptation of beautiful Egyptian empress Cleopatra. Being inveigled and aided by a group of rebellious and untrusting senators around Cassius, his nephew Brutus finally kills Julius Caesar at March 15, 44. B.C. (the Ides of March) at the age of 55, starting an era of civil wars.

What was the significance of Julius Caesar creating jobs for the poor? (10 POINTS TO BEST ANSWER)?
I’m writing a 5 paragraph essay and i need some ideas. thanks

Julius Caesar’s popularity with the poor was one reason the Senate was afraid to act against him politically, and one thing that made him feel like such a threat to their power. The general public was willing to make him emperor, which was new to Rome, and this would have removed them from power.

4 Tilapia filets
1/2 cup ranch dressing
1/4 cup mayo
1/4 cup parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a pyrex pan with nonstick spray. Place tilapia filets on pan. Mix dressing and mayo. Pour dressing on top of filets to cover all fish. Sprinkle with cheese. bake 15 minutes and serve.

i like mine baked…bake at 350
butter a baking dish, season tilapia with salt and pepper (cajun seasoning if you like), place in dish and lay a slice or 2 of lemon on top and bake for about 15 minutes or until tilapia flakes easily with a fork.
Rachel | Jan 19, 2010

Tilapia ia a very mild fish so it will take any seasoning you might enjoy. From soy sauce to garlic to turmeric. But here is a great way to enjoy it.
Season with simple seasoning salt or with dill, lemon and butter. (just place a butter patty on top.)
Wrap each serving piece with foil and fold it tight like you did when you were a boy/girl scout. Seal the edges real good.
Heat up a metal pan, dry, to a medium heat.
Place the foil package in the dry pan and cook for 3-4 minutes.
Turn over and cook for another 3 1/2 minutes.
Remove from heat and carefully open.
You will have 2 things. A CLEAN cooking pan and a very moist and tasty piece of fish.

Man, was I glad to see your question. My wife HATES any and every kind of seafood. I am a seafood junkie. Obviously, by your question you know a thing or two about cooking, so try this one, and see if you like it. Assuming you are using fresh filets, start from here. Preheat your oven to 300. Prep time for the filets is very quick. In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup apple juice, with the juice of 2 fresh squeezed lemons, ( 3 lemons if they are smaller than average. ) 2 - 3 dashes of Tabasco sauce, and 1 tsps. Taragon. Whisk the ingredients together. Now comes the fun. Make a small pouch out of aluminum foil, and spray the bottom of it with Pam, or any store brand non-stick spray, preferably butter flavored. Be liberal with the spray. Once you’ve placed the filet on the foil, baste it with the juice/spice mix. ( Now this is my own recipe, so you feel free to doctor it up any way you want. ) Wrap the foil loosely, closing it off at the top, trying to avoid the top of the foil touching the fish. ( you pointed out that the flesh is tender, and it can be easily ruined if the foil sticks to it. ) Put the packages on the center rack of the oven, with a cookie sheet under it on the bottom rack, just in case of drippage. 10 - 12 minutes should be plenty of time, but up it a little if the filets are thick. ( you can sprinkle some parmesan or mozzarella on top of the fish, but I’m not a big cheese on fish person. ) Oddly enough, fried green tomatoes make an excellent side dish for tilapia, and the mix you use is the same as the lemon/apple juice mix, minus the taragon and add 3 eggs, up the apple juice to 2 cups. Slice the tomatoes thick, dredge them in flour, dip them in the apple juice mix, coat them with corn-meal and fry away. Thanks for letting me share. I haven’t got to cook fish for 6 years now.
